From the brilliant mind who brought us DEERS, PEGGY: THE PLUMBER WHO SAVED THE GALAXY, and Annex’s sold-out run of GUNKED! (co-written with Jo Jo Stiletto) comes another Marcus Gorman gem, GOLD.
When 19-year-old Frankie inherits her late grandfather’s little black book, she goes on a cross-country road trip to meet his mistresses. As she and her college bestie travel across the United States and through decades of her family’s secret history, she learns not just who her grandfather truly was…but also a key to her own identity. GOLD is a funny and relatable dramedy about what we leave behind.
And also some psychedelic dinosaurs.
THE TEAM:
Playwright: Marcus Gorman
Director: Jasmine Joshua
Choreographer: Flossy Beatrice
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
FRANKIE (f, 19): Jewish (doesn’t have to be Ashkenazi), freshman in college, Frankie is too clever by half. Still on the line between being a child and trying to prove adulthood, Frankie has set her mind to figuring out the secrets of her family’s past, regardless of who it hurts or what it uncovers.
CHARLIE (m, various ages): Jewish (doesn’t have to be Ashkenazi), A traveling salesman who we get to see evolve from a shy bumbling rube to a slick ladies’ man to a rough-around-the-edges grandpa with a book full of secrets.
MONA (f, 19): Filipina, Frankie’s best friend from college. She is a scheming adventurer who wants to help Frankie put the pieces to the puzzle together (but not without an ulterior motive of her own).
LILY (f, mid-40s): Any ethnicity, Frankie’s mom, divorced from Daniel. The one true adult. Feels like she’s the outsider of the family, but is a team player.
DANIEL (m, 50s): Jewish (doesn’t have to be Ashkenazi), Frankie’s dad, divorced from Lily. A kvetch with a sharp edge. He loves Frankie and cares deeply for people, but doesn’t know how to show it. A deep wound from his past keeps him from being able to really connect to anyone.
SANDRA/JANICE/NANCY: Any ethnicity. Three women from Charlie’s little black book. They are all different and this actor will be playing them both in present day and when they met Charlie. We’ve got sweet old ladies from Arizona, pill-popping flower children, and tough Working Girl ’80s power suits. This is a dynamic role for an actor who will get to show off their range.
Most actors will play additional characters in the script.
