General Auditions for Actors who are Deaf or Disabled

Expires: December 3, 2019

About the Project

AUDITIONS  -- General Auditions/Interviews

Sound Theatre Company is hosting general auditions for actors, singers, dancers, and other performers who are Deaf or have a disability.  Through these auditions, we hope to learn more about and connect more deeply with the thriving community of artists in the region who identify as having a disability. Additionally, we hope to develop a pool of talent to fulfill local casting needs and to influence programming and casting decisions within our larger community of producing organizations.  At this time we are only auditioning adult artists (16 and up).

  • Sound Theatre Company is casting for it’s upcoming 2020 Season, in particular the July/August 2020 production of The Madwoman of Chaillot by Jean Giraudoux, translated by Maurice Valency which will feature a diverse cast.  Sound Theatre Company is also casting for Native and Indigenous Play Readings seeking Native actors who are Deaf or disabled.   (Stipend)
  • Seattle Public Theatre is casting Cost of Living and considering their 20/21 season projects (Paid- Contract)
  • Rooted In Rights is casting Deaf and disabled actors for disability rights advocacy and informational videos on an ongoing basis. (Paid-stipend)
  • ReAct Theatre, June 2020 is casting City of Refuge  Casting for a monoped amputee, male or female, of any race or ethnicity. Paid position. This is a movement-based play with no spoken text.

The goal for this round of auditions is to learn about and help to build a local community of performing artists who self-identify as disabled.   We recognize that some disabilities are “invisible” and some are “visible”; we welcome all who self-identify as “disabled” because of their lived experience with existing social, cultural, or physical barriers.

We want to know about your interests, talents, experiences and also any accommodation, service, or resource that arts groups can provide to ensure that you can participate fully in our theatrical work.

10 minutes appointments **CAN** include any of the following:

  • 2-minute prepared/memorized audition monologue.
  • Prepared a cappella song. (No accompaniment will be provided.)
  • An informal interview to discuss experiences and interests.
  • Cold readings of “sides” (scenes from plays) provided by Sound Theatre Company. These sides will be made available in advance and in Braille, large print, or audio format with prior notice.
  • A brief story, either prepared or told extemporaneously.

We are entering some new territory that may challenge the traditional conventions of auditions, rehearsal, and performance in Seattle theatre. Thank you so much for allowing us to learn how we can create supportive practices as we build an inclusive arts community that provides access for ALL artists and audience.
