Ever wonder how the Gregory Awards come together? Want to know how the nominations are scored? Here`s a quick look at the year long journey.

1. New and Returning nominators are selected for the next season
Each year, Theatre Puget Sound selects 60 -100 Gregory Award nominators. They`re selected based on performing arts experience, demonstrated understanding of the art form, areas of expertise, location, and availability. Nominators commit their time, energy and theatrical judgment to seeing a significant amount of work across the Puget Sound region.

2. Shows are submitted by local organizations
Any Member Organization with TPS is able to submit a production for consideration at least 2 weeks before opening night.

3. Trained Nominators attend & score each production
Productions are assigned to nominators based on region and availability. Ten nominators are selected to attend and score each production.

Within 72 hours of seeing the show, the nominator submits their scores online. Scores range from 1–100, using the Gregory Awards scoring rubric:
81–100 - Outstanding / Excellent
61–80 - Very Good
41–60 - Good
21–40 - Competent
1–20 - Unremarkable

Nominators are asked to look for whether the production successfully achieved excellence on its own terms. A musical isn`t being judged against a straight play. A tiny production isn`t being judged by how much money it spent. A design isn`t simply being judged by how expensive the materials look.

4. Scores are tallied by TPS Staff
At the end of the season, TPS compiles the scores for each category and finds the average score for each nominee.

5. Finalists in each category are announced.
TPS will begin announcing these by September 21st!

6. YOU vote in Member`s Choice categories.
Starting September 26th all TPS Members (Individual or Patron) can vote for Member`s Choice categories like Outstanding Ensemble Musical, Outstanding Production Play, and many more!

7. Celebrate the full performing arts community and all nominees at the big event 🎉
We`ll see you all on October 26th to celebrate your immense achievements.

The Gregory Awards have been in Seattle since 1998, and are named after local theatre visionary, Gregory A. Falls. His enduring quote: "Theaters, like grapes, grow best in bunches" is also the inspiration for this year`s theme.

But who WAS Gregory?

Gregory A. Falls, was a chair of the UW School of Drama and is credited with creating Seattle’s vibrant theater scene. More than any other individual, Falls was “responsible for the theater boom in this town,” says Arne Zaslove, artistic director of the Bathhouse Theatre at Green Lake. “He was the impresario of bringing it all together.”

Falls came to Seattle in 1961 and decided to create ACT in 1965 because he saw that the two-year-old Seattle Repertory Theater as mostly committed to classics. He wanted ACT to produce plays that then were revitalizing the American theater. He was instrumental in helping other theaters get their start, including The Empty Space and Intiman.

A native of Russellville, Ark., Falls was always interested in theater. He was active in high school plays, and his mother was known to complain about him loaning out their furniture for theater productions.

A Fulbright scholar, Falls came to Seattle in 1961 to head up the UW School of Drama. He founded the highly acclaimed Professional Actor Training Program and the school’s doctoral program. In addition, he actively engaged as a playwright and play director in the UW comprehensive child drama/theater program.

Under his leadership, the UW drama school became one of the best in the nation. Among the students to come through the Professional Actor Training Program are Patrick Duffy, ’71; Jean Smart, ’74; Pamela Reed, ’75; Kyle MacLachlan, ’82; and Richard Karn, ’79.

Falls left the UW in 1971 to devote more time to ACT, though he stayed on as a part-time faculty member until 1976. He earned a long list of awards for his work in the theater. A former president of the National Theater Conference and Washington Association of Theater Artists, Falls was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Theatre in 1994.
