In Memoriam: John Dillon (founding President)

Category: TPS News

It is with a heavy but full heart that we share the passing of TPS Founding President, John Dillon. John paved the way to found TPS in 1997, and advocated for the region’s growing theatre community and much-needed services for artists around the Puget Sound region. However, John’s legacy extends far beyond the Seattle region.

John has staged productions at leading theaters in England, Russia, Egypt and Japan and has worked at over two dozen of the leading regional theaters around the United States. He also served as the Associate Director of Tokyo’s Institute of Dramatic Arts. Throughout his impressive career, John was also fellow in the College of Fellows of the American Theatre and a member of the National Theatre Conference, and a Danforth and Woodrow Wilson fellow with graduate degrees in theater from Columbia and Northwestern Universities. And, his support of TPS was vital and long-lasting.

“John was instrumental to the theatre community, and continued to be so for as long as he was able. Early last year, right after I came on board, John reached out to offer his historical knowledge, successes, challenges, advice, mentorship, connections, expertise, and support for the organization and community he so loved. He was also among the first to support the ongoing Save TPS Campaign which has been proving successful toward continuing the organization he help found 27 years ago. I will be ever grateful.” ~ Dr. Crystal Yingling, TPS Executive Director

“The passing of John Dillon is a huge loss to the Seattle theatre community and to TPS. John was a major driving force in the meetings that led to the creation of TPS in 1997. I consider myself privileged to have been part of that group, and treasure my memories of serving on the Board during his years as Founding President. Having recently rejoined the Board, I look forward to carrying on John’s legacy as we continue to revitalize TPS and the Seattle community post-pandemic. Thank you, John, for your inspiration.” ~ Barbara Callander, TPS Founding & current Board Member

Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.
