A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cance

About the project and the company

Red Curtain announces auditions for our upcoming production of, “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City,” written by Halley Feiffer and directed by Sherry Penoyer.

A foul-mouthed comedienne and a middle-aged man embroiled in a nasty divorce are brought together unexpectedly when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. Together, this unlikely duo must negotiate some of life’s biggest challenges … while making some of the world’s most inappropriate jokes. Can these two very lost people learn to laugh through their pain and lean on each other, when all they really want to do is run away?

Please note this play contains profanity, sexually explicit language, and verbal/psychological abuse as well as an explicitly sexual scene between Karla and Don. Partial nudity may be required of Karla and Don. This show holds a suggested R-rating.

Character breakdown / Project needs
All roles are open and Red Curtain encourages unconventional casting including gender-blind and color-conscious casting for all roles. Ages listed reflect those of the characters, not necessarily the ages of the actors.
KARLA: (25-35)
A charismatic women whose somewhat innocent demeanor belies and incredibly dirty mouth and mind. Spunky, spirited, angry, wickedly funny. A stand-up comedienne with a real penchant for dark humor which she uses to hide behind and distract herself from the pain of her mother’s sickness. Actress should be comfortable using prolific profanity/vulgarities. Includes sexually explicit scene and potential partial nudity.
DON: (45-60)
An unassuming man. The kind of person you would never notice on the subway or walking down the street – an “everyman” in the most boring sense of the word. Clearly has been through a lot of stress both in life-in-general and also more acutely quite recently. Employs a raging temper to mask the gaping would left from his recent marital split and his mother’s illness. Includes sexually explicit scene and potential partial nudity.
MARCIE: (50-60)
Karla’s mother. Recovering from a hysterectomy to treat Stage I endometrial cancer. Very dry wit, this dark humor belies not only oceans of pain but also an abusive, selfish cruelty. Still, she is capable of deep love and moments of tender vulnerability.
GEENA: (60-75)
Don’s mother. Has been battling ovarian cancer for seven years. Brave. Tired.
