Audition for Dream Hou$e with Washington Ensemble Theatre

Washington Ensemble Theatre

About the project and the company

Dream Hou$e follows two Latina sisters on an HGTV-style reality show who are selling their family home, hoping to capitalize on the gentrification in their “changing neighborhood.” As they perform for the camera, one sister grapples with turmoil in the family’s ancestral past while the other learns how much she’s willing to sacrifice for the family’s future. What is the cultural cost of progress in America — and is cashing in always selling out?

Playwright Note on Casting:

The Latine community is not monolithic and its identities exist along a

spectrum of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The play’s themes

of displacement are particularly embedded in Indigenous Latine and

Black Latine experiences. I encourage producing theaters to be mindful

of the communities present in your city.

Director’s Note:

Keeping in mind the Playwright’s note on casting, we want to reflect the communities in Seattle that have experienced displacement through colonization and/or gentrification and encourage non-Latine Black and Indigenous folks to audition.

Director Bio:

Suz Pontillo (she/they) is a first-generation Chilean-American multi-hyphenate queer artist from Miami, Florida. Since moving to Seattle in 2020, Suz has had the opportunity to work with Tacoma Arts Live, Burien Actors Theatre, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, and Dacha. They are a proud founder of Queen City Theatre and member of Washington Ensemble Theatre.

Character breakdown / Project needs
PATRICIA (she/her)
Early 30's to Late 30’s, Latine/Afrolatine. Accountant by day. Julia’s older sister, with a distinct Older Sister Complex. She’s practical to the core, and a natural caretaker – but often resentful of that role. She lived in the house for over a year taking care of their ailing mother. She believes money brings dignity, security, meaning.
JULIA (she/her)
Late 20’s, Latine/Afrolatine. Social studies teacher by day. Patricia’s younger sister, six months pregnant. She hasn’t lived in the house since she left for college, and is recently reclaiming her heritage in preparation for motherhood. Very sentimental. She believes culture brings dignity, security, meaning. The role of Julia has been cast. We're currently looking for understudies to cover this role.
TESSA (she/her)
Early 30’s, white. Real estate agent and TV Host, well-meaning and energetic, always radiating charm. Tessa controls the reality show, and everything within it. She genuinely wants to help the Sisters, and using the show to get them the biggest payout possible is her understanding of what they need.
