Audition for "The Pirates of Penzance"

The Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society

About the project and the company

The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society is excited to announce auditions for:

The Pirates of Penzance

 – or, The Slave of Duty

Performed at The Bagley Wright Theater, July 15 – July 31, 2022.

Directed by Phil Lacey, Music Direction by Bernie Kwiram

A love story, of sorts, involving the famous pirates of Penzance, a bevy of beautiful maidens, a Major General, a kickass nurse, and a corps of Keystone cops. The course of true love never did run smooth (sail smooth? sail smoothly?), and Seattle G&S is excited to create a fun new take on this classic operetta. Balancing the power dynamic between the men and women with a re-envisioned Ruth and cadre of powerful daughters, prepare for an exciting new staging where the men get more than they bargained for and the women just may save the day.

All roles are open, and we encourage performers from all racial and ethnic backgrounds and all gender identities to audition.

Rehearsals will begin June 5, with rehearsals a maximum of 5 days each week, and 8 hour (or less) tech days. The production opens July 15, and performs for 13 performances at the Bagley Wright Theatre, closing on July 31.

Please find the working rehearsal / performance calendar in this GoogleDrive here.

COVID PRECAUTIONS:

All company members will be required to submit proof of COVID vaccination in order to participate. Additionally, we will be following industry standard precautions throughout the audition, rehearsal, and performance process. We anticipate these guidelines to be constantly changing, and will communicate ongoing requirements with auditioners, cast, and crew as we continue through the process.

Location of Audition

All auditions and callbacks take place at the G&S rehearsal facility at 9250 14th Ave NW, in Crown Hill.

Audition requirements

Please prepare two short contrasting vocal selections: the first should be a selection in the style of this show – from a different G&S, or something from opera, operetta, or classic musical theater; the second should be a contrasting selection that highlights your voice and personality. Anything from opera to rock opera. // Please select pieces that showcase both your voice as well as your acting ability. Pieces should be anywhere from 16 – 32 bars in length (usually about a verse and a chorus). Each piece should not go longer than 60 seconds. (we truly mean this, and the auditors may cut you off if the song drags on and on) // Please bring clearly marked sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. // For any auditioners who are unable to attend in-person auditions - either because they are unavailable during the audition time frame or if they need to exercise additional precaution due to COVID – initial submissions can also be made via video. // The requirements will be the same as the in-person auditions above, two contrasting pieces that showcase voice and acting ability. More information and submission instructions can be found in the GoogleDrive here. // All callbacks will take place in person. It is very possible to be offered a role solely from a video submission. However, it will be difficult to be considered for a primary role if you are not able to attend callbacks.

Character breakdown / Project needs
Mabel
(soprano, C#4 – D6) - The beautiful and independent coloratura soprano, one of Major-General Stanley’s daughters. More independent than you might expect. Falls in love with Frederic.
Ruth
(contralto, G3 – F#5) - Frederic’s former nurse who has really taken to the piratical life. If the Hell’s Angels had a nautical division that cleaned up nicely and wore D&G, she’d be their captain.
Edith
(mezzo, Ab3 – G5) - The leader of Major-General Stanley’s daughters. Stage combat training a plus.
Kate
(mezzo, Ab3 – E5) - A younger-but-outspoken daughter of Major-General Stanley. Gymnastic training a plus.
Doctor of Divinity
(nonspeaking) - Who resides in this vicinity. Will double in the ensemble.
The Pirate King
(dramatic baritone, F#2 – G#4) - A pirate king. Obviously.
Major-General Stanley
(comic baritone, Bb2 – F4) - A bumbling major general and doting father.
Frederic
(tenor, D3 – Bb4) - Naïve young lad in love with Mabel and in over his head with the pirates and his understanding of “duty”.
Sergeant of Police
(bass, F2 – E4) - An enthusiastic, cowardly custard of a police person.
Samuel
(not quite as dramatic bari-tenor, Eb2 – F4) - The fearless lieutenant to The Pirate King.
Ensemble
Strong singers and movers of every type to play pirates, daughters, and bobbies. Stage combat training a plus. Gymnastic and dance training a plus. Ability to play the accordion or ukulele a plus. Sense of humor an absolute necessity.
