Audition: When I Began Dying

The Shattered Glass Project

About the project and the company

“When I Began Dying”

written by Sarah Miri Daniels and directed by Sophe Friedman.

ABOUT THE PLAY AND THE PRODUCTION:

When I Began Dying is a story of journey, death, and rebirth, the world of the play is one of whimsy and liminality for as the protagonist (Linn) gets closer to her final moments, the world she has known gets farther away from any familiar reality. Together, Linn and her expired self (Dead Linn) must conquer their fears, come to terms with their past, and find their way through the inevitable ending.

Content warnings: Storyline deals heavily with death and suicide. Questions about the script may be addressed to us at theshatteredglassproject@gmail.com and we will arrange for responses from the director.

Character breakdown / Project needs
LINN
A young fat woman who has lived her life without the courage to take control of her dreams. She finds herself adrift, heading towards one sure conclusion; nothing special and a side of death. She is a painter but will never sell a painting. Also--this story isn’t about her being fat, she still is. Female-presenting, some movement required
DEAD LINN
A young still fat dead woman who knows how this story goes; it’s her own. Come back again (not quite sure how? why?) She wants to change fate and live a little after she dies, which has already happened-- duh.. Female- presenting, some movement required
BLACK CAT:
Linn’s therapist who is prone to many questions with few answers, and the odd history lecture. She is made up of night terrors that make you sweat through your sheets. Beware. Movement-based
BLUE GIRL:
She’s a blue girl, from a blue world, she dances, she plays; she exists only for the page. Who's really behind all that blue? Movement-based, dance background a plus. Female-presenting
BROWN BEAR:
Linn’s Date who is a large warm presence, they are just happy to be out in actual civilization and not river fishing. They are looking for love, or just companionship, or just someone to scritch their back every once in a while. Movement-based
COUNT MAITRE D:
They’re a vampire waiter of course--Mwah ha ha ha!(pls tip them, garlic repellent isn’t free ya know.)
MOTHER
She creates a new life from the old ones; a vessel and the mold.
download
She is a new life and an old one; witnesses creation.
