Auditions For "As You Like It - Public Theater Musical"

Drama Dock

About the project and the company

Drama Dock announces adult and youth non-union auditions for their March 2023 production of As You Like It, a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy, adapted by Shaina Taub & Laurie Woolery, and a co-production with Vashon Island High School’s Drama Department, directed by Christopher Kehoe and Andy James. This will be an intergenerational cast blending community actors, professional actors, and high school actors. The roles of Orlando, Rosalind, and other young lover tracks will be cast with high school students. Please see roles available to non-students below.

We have need for non-union actors of all ages (from child and teenager through to middle age and senior) and can find a place for actors and singers at all skill levels. That’s our way of encouraging you to come out and audition, even if you’re self-conscious! We want to see you!

Audition requirements

Auditions will be held on Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 from 12:00pm–6:00pm at Vashon Island High School, 9600 SW 204th St, Vashon, WA 98070. Please sign up for an audition slot at this link; walk-ups will be added to the schedule if time allows. For adults, please bring a resume and headshot, and prepare a short text (monologue or poem) and 16–32 bars of a song (or “Happy Birthday”). The text and song should be material you enjoy performing and sparks joy (being age/sex/gender “appropriate” is not so important). Please come with sheet music (not acapella), and the text should be memorized well enough to take direction. Feel free to come in with material from As You Like It—either Shakespeare’s or Shaina Taub’s. For youth, simply come in ready to play a game and pretend to be a superhero or other silly person. If needed, self-tape auditions will be accepted until the end of Friday, December 8 at the latest. Please email a link to an unlisted YouTube video of the above material to AYLI@christopherkehoe.com. Don’t worry about your camerawork or filming location! We’re only interested in seeing you!

Character breakdown / Project needs
Duke Senior
(male, or male-identifying): the former Duke of Arden, deposed by his brother and exiled to the Forest of Arden. A new “ruler” of the fellow exiled, and has come to love living in nature. Receives Orlando and helps rehabilitate him. Believes in love. Real Ghost of Christmas Present energy. Tenor. Principal role.
Duke Frederick
(male, or male-identifying): Duke Senior’s younger brother, and a very mean man. He’s become Duke of Arden by deposing his brother, and now rules with much less compassion than the former regime. Loves watching his royal wrestling tournaments. Melodramatic villainy will be appreciated! Baritone. Principal role.
Touchstone
(male, or male-identifying): a clown (no red nose) and comedic relief as part of Rosalind’s retinue. Principal role.Touchstone plays with both modern and Shakespearean senses of humor, so a good grip on language will be necessary. Note: Touchstone and Andy develop a romantic relationship over the play, and it’s expected that the two male actors will be comfortable with an onstage kiss. Tenor/Baritone. Principal role.
Andy
(male, or male-identifying): a simple farmhand in the Forest of Arden. Like Paul Rudd in “Friends,” he just kinda slots in with the main crew, and part of the comedy comes from the fact that he’s just…there. Note: Andy and Touchstone develop a romantic relationship over the play, and it’s expected that the two male actors will be comfortable with an onstage kiss. Tenor/Baritone. Principal role.
Jaques
(no sex or gender constraints): a philosopher and writer in the Forest of Arden. Opens and closes the entire play a direct address, and delivers the overarching “all the world’s a stage” metaphor. Probably ruminates too much for their own good, and is slightly pessimistic of humanity’s impact on the natural world. Their comedy is a dark sense of humor with a light touch. A great foil to Duke Senior’s vivaciousness. Alto (but we can play with octaves). Principal role.
Adam
Orlando’s and Oliver’s gentleman. Non-principal.
Papa Corin
a farmer - non-principal.
Mama Corin
a farmer, married to Papa Corin. Non-principal.
Grandma Rosalind
Rosalind in the future. Non-principal
Grandpa Orlando
Orlando in the future. Non-principal.
Ensemble

Young Orlando
