About the project and the company

BEE زﻧﺑور is the story of Izat, a young Iranian girl trapped in an abusive marriage in the 1940s. After years of suffering both physically and mentally at the hands of her spouse she knows the only way she will survive is if she is able to leave him. In an unprecedented move, her father is able to use his influence to secure a divorce for her. Moving back and forth in time from 1940 to 2009, the story weaves together Izat’s struggles with her path to a happier life. Based on a true story and inspired by a collection of interviews from Middle Eastern immigrants and refugees.

This piece will be performed by only females and will have women playing men. The ages listed are the character’s age but the actress’ age is flexible. We are looking for an ensemble that is creative and open to playing.

For 23 years, CoHo Productions has pioneered artist-led co-production as a model of creating theatre. LES Shakespeare Co. is co-producing the production, founded by Melody Erfani. In 2017 the piece was developed at Barns Art Collective in Maine then work-shopped at HB Studio Residency in NYC. It received a run in 2018 at HB Playwrites Theatre.

Audition requirements

There will be some movement so please wear comfortable clothes. If you could please prepare a 1 minute monologue either contemporary or classical. There will also be provide sides provided.

Character breakdown / Project needs

Izat

(18-30)- married at 13 years old, this play catalogs her journey playing ages 13-80, demure but strong, passionate about her faith, devoted mother and daughter

Dariush

(male 30-45 played by a female)- husband to Izat, 20 years older than her, has internal demons and likes to be in control

Rahman

(male 40-65 played by a female)- Izat's father, a religious man and leader in the community, kind and wise

Sharhrazad

(female 18-25) - Izat's best friend, loyal and strong willed, enjoys life
