About the project and the company

Burien Actors Theatre (BAT) is seeking 4 actors all races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, and physical/mental ability.for a production of the dramatic comedy Tiny Beautiful Things. The play is based on the book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos.

ABOUT THE SHOW

A celebration of the simple beauty of being human, this funny and deeply moving exploration of resilience is based on Cheryl Strayed’s (Wild) journey as the beloved anonymous advice columnist for Dear Sugar. Over the years, thousands of people turned to Sugar for wisdom, compassion, and hope. At first unsure of herself, Sugar finds a way to weave her own life experiences together with the deep yearning and heartrending questions from her readers.

Contains strong language and some adult content.

SHOW SCHEDULE

Approx. March 12 – April 14: Rehearsal will be in Burien with some initial rehearsals via Zoom. Exact schedule TBD based on actor availability, 3 to 5 days per week, weekday evenings and weekend afternoons/evenings. Actors will receive general schedule by start of process. Exact calls will be sent out by start of each week.

April 15 – April 20: Tech will be in Burien in the Theater at Kennedy Catholic High School. Plan on full days Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16, plus full evenings April 17-20.

April 21 – May 14: Performances are Friday and Saturday nights at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm in the Theater at Kennedy Catholic High School.

COVID-19 EXPECTATIONS

All members of the team must be fully vaccinated and have received at least one booster by the start of the rehearsal process. While not required, we strongly recommend receiving the bi-valent booster prior to the rehearsal process beginning.

All members of the team will be required to test regularly and report any possible Covid exposures.

Everyone will be masked during in-person auditions and in-person rehearsals until we get near tech. Performers will be unmasked for shows, but audience will be masked.

Masking and other Covid protocols will adjust as needed to meet government requirements and/or enhance safety.

There is free parking onsite and nearby, plus rehearsal and show location is about 6 blocks from Burien Transit Center.

Location of Audition

Auditions will be online via Zoom--link will be sent when audition requested. Callbacks will be in-person in Burien--address will be provided with callbacks invite.

Audition requirements

Auditions will consist of sides, reading from the script and will be held on Zoom, alone or with other actors, and will last 20 to 30 minutes. Callbacks will be in person. Sides for auditions and callbacks will be sent via email. If there is anything that will help make you comfortable in our auditions, please ask.

Character breakdown / Project needs
SUGAR
Female-identifying, 30s to 50s, a writer, married mother of two children, by turns confident and flailing, positive and existentially sad, strong and deeply confused. On a whim, she takes a job as an anonymous online advice columnist, only to discover that she needs the Letter Writers as much as they need her.
LETTER WRITER #1
Plays multiple, most often male, teen and adult characters. This actor plays someone who repeatedly trolls Sugar online by signing as WTF, and a father who has lost his 22-year-old son in a car accident. Must have the ability to transform in a real, internally driven manner, not via caricature.
LETTER WRITER #2
Plays multiple, most often female, teen and adult characters through age 70. This actor plays a woman dealing with the aftereffects of a miscarriage, a woman who was raped, and Sugar's mother in flashbacks. Must have the ability to transform in a real, internally driven manner, not via caricature.
LETTER WRITER #3
Plays multiple teen and adult characters. This actor plays a transgender person in search of an answer about family, plus someone who is unsure about maintaining a relationship with a narcissist father. Must have the ability to transform in a real, internally driven manner, not via caricature.

Callbacks or second audition/interview?

Mon. 3/6 and Tues. 3/7 from 6-10 pm in person in Burien. Actors will only be called as needed, and not for the entire time period.
