AUDITIONS FOR SOMEWHERE BETWEEN

VASHON REPERTORY THEATER

About the project and the company

Vashon Repertory Theatre seeks union and non-union actors for the Summer 2022 world premiere production of Somewhere Between, a new musical.

Self-tape audition is due by Wednesday, March 9 at 5:00pm.

Summary

Benjamin is coming of age—ten years late!  While the small town dreamer tinkers on a motorbike and a vague plan to see the world, his long-time sweetheart urges him towards marriage, and his influential father lines him up a dream job. Ben struggles to decide which way to go, while worried his biggest decisions are being impacted by his cyclothymic mood swings. Pressure mounts when a charismatic stranger appears, and his dad’s political ambitions expose old resentments and new financial strains.  SOMEWHERE BETWEEN is about blazing your own trail in life, while dodging the path your loved ones want to put you on.

The world of SOMEWHERE BETWEEN should reflect the racial diversity of present day United States. Actors of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to audition for all roles. See breakdown later in this posting.

Character breakdown / Project needs
Benjamin (he/him), late 20’s. Baritenor or Tenor.
An enthusiastic, free spirit on a complacent path to marry his high-school sweetheart as he yearns to re-create the happy home he remembers from childhood before his mom died. His growing yearning to explore the world beyond his small town, expectations from friends and family, and an evolving relationship with his sexual identity all come to a head as he experiences a depressive episode.
Kate (she/her), late 20’s. Alto Belt.
Ben’s fiancé, sensible and smart, says what she thinks and does what she wants. She helps her Aunt Alice run the town cafe. Her ambitious plans to expand the business into a community space and start a family with Ben are shaken up when Travis arrives.
Roger (he/him), 50’s - 60’s. Baritone or Bass.
Ben’s dad, a realtor and conservative town councilman who covets a chance at state office. He rarely softens from the characteristics engrained during his military time, so he has trouble communicating that he does love and care for Ben.
Alice (she/her), 40’s to 60’s. Mezzo
Kate’s aunt, a warm, caring woman who runs the cafe. All seek her advice because she’s smart, with strong principles. Sharp comedic timing..
Travis (he/him), 30’s. Baritenor or Tenor.
ALREADY CAST. An appealing, charismatic artist who shows up in town for mysterious reasons. Thoughtful, poetic, but down to earth and with a droll sense of humor, he makes everyone think twice about their lives. - Please note: the role of Travis is already cast for this production.
