About the project and the company

Ballyhoo Theatre is searching for actors for our upcoming MAINSTAGE production of Ruthless.

Rehearsals start February 1, 2020. Performances will be at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds and run March 6-22, 2020. Auditions and most rehearsals will be at Edmonds Center for the Arts, in downtown Edmonds.

Eight-year-old Tina Denmark knows she was born to play Pippi Longstocking, and she will do anything to win the part in her school musical. This musical parody of The Bad Seed, Gypsy, All About Eve, and a host of other shows, is good, campy fun!

Actors of all ethnicities, genders, identities and abilities are encouraged to audition. Although all roles are female presenting, one or more are typically played by male presenting folx. All performers will receive a small travel stipend. (This is a NON-UNION project, despite what the listing reflects.)

Audition requirements

Please prepare 32 bars (or verse and chorus) of a comedy musical theatre song AND a one-minute monologue. Sheet music should be clearly marked and in your key. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring a current headshot and resume to your audition. Auditions are December 12 and 13, and call-backs will take place Saturday, December 14. Bring your calendar with you, you’ll be filling out a conflict form before your audition

Character breakdown / Project needs

Tina Denmark:

Female presenting, ages 10-20 (to play 8). We are not sure if we’d like to cast a child, teen or adult for this role, but are open to any. Tina is cute, and talented, and precious, and beautiful, and sweet, and caring, and....deadly! Must tap.

Judy Denmark/ Ginger Delmarco:

Female presenting, late 20-30s. Judy, also known as “Tina’s mother,” starts the show as a dull, doting Donna Reed-type mother who lives only to serve her talented little girl. By act two, she morphs into a full-blown Broadway diva.

Lita Encore:

Female presenting, late 40s to 50s, Judy's adoptive mother, a famous theatre critic who is tough as nails. She's even willing to give her own grandchild a scathing review.

Myrna Thorn/Ms. Block:

Female presenting, 30s to 40s. Myrna is Tina's third grade teacher. A frustrated ex-actress, her life revolves around the school musical. All she really wants is to get rid of all of these snot-nosed little brats and get on with her life. This actor will also play the role of Ms. Block, a flirtatious reporter for the New York Thespian magazine.

Sylvia St. Croix:

Female presenting (but the role is in the high baritone range), late 40s to 50s. Sylvia is a pompous theatrical agent who feeds Tina’s dreams of stardom, and has a deep, dark hidden secret. She has much of the shows campy humor and delivers many wacky moments, quick asides and stinging retorts.

Eve:

Female presenting, Late teens-early 30s. Eve is Judy's personal assistant, and is, well, completely off her rocker. She not only admires Ginger DelMarco, she wants to BE Ginger DelMarco and will stop at nothing to become just like her. Eve appears in the second act only.

Louise Lerman:

Female presenting, ages 10-20 (to play 8). We are not sure if we’d like to cast a child, teen or adult for this role, but are open to any. This role also may be doubled by the actress playing Eve. Louise appears in the first act only. Since her parents are well-connected and rich, Louise lands the title role in the musical “Pippi Goes to Tahiti.” Poor Louise....along with signing up for a role, she also signs her own death warrant!
