Much Ado About Nothing – Hybrid (In-Person/Streaming)

Dacha Theatre

About the project and the company

This December, Dacha will be producing a re-imagined version of Much Ado About Nothing, with a hybrid in-person and streaming format!

Dacha’s Much Ado About Nothing will follow in the footsteps of our raucous and lively As You Like It as a celebratory, communal experience for our audiences, both a “studio audience” in the venue with us and a streaming audience at home. In addition to streaming the show, we’re hoping to use live cameras in the space for some playful visuals, and will be borrowing from relevant genres to build a world that feels pulled together by the artists in the room – think theater artists storming a public-access TV studio. Maybe there are hand made title cards? Green screen gags for correspondents “on location”? Fake microphones with cardboard news logos? Sock puppets?

DATES:
Rehearsals will begin the week of November 1st, and run five days a week, with rehearsals on weekday evenings and weekends. Actors should expect to be called 3-4 days a week for the majority of the process, and 4-5 days a week during the final 2 weeks of rehearsal.
Performances will run December 10th-19th, with the possibility of a short extension pending cast availability.

COVID Procedures:

  • All actors and production crew members must be fully vaccinated (two weeks past their final shot) as of October 22nd to be considered.
  • Shows will include both streaming and in-person audiences. All in-person audience members will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test from within 48 hours to attend.
  • Actors will be unmasked for performances and for any rehearsals occurring in a space that is closed to the public
  • All personnel will be screened with a temperature check prior to entering the rehearsal or performance space
  • All personnel will be expected to stay home if they are feeling unwell. There will be swings staffed on the show to cover roles if performers need to stay home.

Audition Process:

STEP ONE:
Fill out our audition form ( https://forms.gle/azcDeAGoof73dDYF6 )

STEP TWO:
1. Submit a video audition monologue (specifications below),
OR 2. Attend a monologue workshop on Wednesday October 20th

STEP THREE:
Attend in-person callbacks on either:
Saturday October 23rd between 1-5PM
Sunday October 24th between 5-8PM

Please not that we have a limited capacity for our in-person callback sessions. We will let you know if we are able to see you by Thursday, October 21st.

Video monologues can be submitted at the link on our website (dachatheatre.com/auditions).

Audition Requirements:

In order to be considered for callbacks, auditioners must do one of the following:

OPTION 1: A video audition of one Shakespearean monologue, performed two times with two different approaches/takes.
Please find the specifications for the video audition below:

  • One monologue, performed two times with different approaches or takes. We would like to see the monologue one time in a more “text-focused”/traditional approach, and a second time with an approach that makes a big choice in terms of characterization, location, or design.
  • We should be able to see your face in at least one of your two monologue performances
  • It is our preference that this monologue is memorized, but we would rather see something than nothing!

We have provided some selections for this monologue on our website – but, we are also happy to see a different monologue you have prepared instead. If you choose to bring your own monologue, we recommend that it fits the following guidelines:
– Shows some comedic rhythm or timing
– Shows some use of verse
– Shows a strong sense of character
Please find our monologue selections on our website at dachatheatre.com/auditions

Video auditions must be received by 5PM on Thursday, October 21st.
There will be limited in-person audition slots available on 10/20 for auditioners who would prefer not to do a video audition. The specifications for those auditions are identical to those of the video auditions.

OPTION TWO: A 2-hour monologue workshop on Wednesday, October 20th.
The monologue audition workshop is intended for performers with limited Shakespeare experience, and will take the place of a video audition. You will be working with co-Artistic Director Kate Drummond for a 2-hour workshop on Wednesday, October 20th.

  • While it is not necessary to come in with a memorized monologue, you will be expected to familiarize yourself with the text being used for the workshop ahead of time. This text will be emailed to you following your submission of the audition form.
  • If you are unsure of whether this workshop is a good fit for you, please reach out to dachacasting@gmail.com.
  • Auditioners who have Shakespeare experience will be encouraged to submit a video audition instead of attending the monologue workshop.

Any questions regarding our video submissions or monologue workshop can be directed at dachacasting@gmail.com.

Please note that you WILL NOT be invited to callbacks without either submitting a monologue audition, or attending the monologue workshop.

Location of Audition

Primarily virtual. In-person monologue workshop and limited in-person monologue slots will be in Phinney Ridge.
