About the project and the company
Radial Theater Project is organizing a public reading of a new work titled My Body No Choice. It includes 8 short monologues by 8 different playwrights writing on the topic of reproductive rights. The playwrights are: Lee Cataluna, Fatima Dyfan, Lisa Loomer, Dael Orlandersmith, Sarah Ruhl, Mary Hall Surface, V (formerly Eve Ensler), and “Anonymous”.
The scripts were commissioned by Arena Stage in Washington D.C. and are being mounted there as a full production. In coordination with Arena, theaters around the country are staging one-night public readings of the monologues. More information about the project is available on the Arena Stage website.
The Seattle reading will be on the evening of Monday, October 24 at 18th & Union. This will be a free event, no admission fees, with seating open to the public. Playwrights are waiving royalties, and all participating theaters are working on a no-revenue model. Radial is funding the project to cover venue rent and artists honoraria to help cover travel or other expenses.
Job Description
Each director who signs on will direct 1 or 2 of the 8 monologues. They'll cast and rehearse their segments on their own schedule. There will be one full company rehearsal at 18th & Union on the afternoon of the event, and then the public reading on October 24. This will be an unmemorized reading with music stand and printed script.
