About the project and the company

On Golden Pond
Written by Earnest Thompson
Directed by Bob Callahan

The Setting
In the summer home of Norman and Ethel Thayer in the late 1970’s. Norman is a retired Professor from the University of Pennsylvania. During the course of the play he has his 80th birthday. He suffers from occasional heart palpitations and his memory is not what it once was and even he recognizes that he is “slipping.” When “on his game” he can be witty with a decided “edge” to it. He might not like to admit it, but he is dependent on his wife, Ethel, for emotional support.

Character breakdown / Project needs
Norman
A retired Professor from the University of Pennsylvania. During the course of the play he has his 80th birthday. He suffers from occasional heart palpitations and his memory is not what it once was and even he recognizes that he is "slipping." When "on his game" he can be witty with a decided "edge" to it. He might not like to admit it, but he is dependent on his wife for emotional support.
Ethel
Ten years younger than Norman, is the rock and the glue that holds the couple together. Their daughter Chelsea has not visited them in eight years because of ongoing emotional distancing with Norman since childhood. Chelsea still feels very close and loves her mother. Ethel has secretly persuaded Chelsea to come to Maine to celebrate Norman's 80th birthday. Ethel is tireless in her pursuit of a happy life for her little family. She is energetic, loves nature, the outdoors and her husband, Norman. Norman drives her to the edge of patience with his lifelong morbid preoccupation with death.
Chelsea
Age 42, divorced and currently with Bill Ray a successful Dentist. They reside in Los Angeles where Chelsea acts and feels "grown-up" as opposed to feeling like a "fat little girl"" when she is around Norman. She is indeed an attractive woman who becomes fragile around her father.
Billy Ray
Age 45, divorced and father of Billy Ray his 13 year old son. Bill is a Dentist and an attractive man and is very happy that he has found love and contentment in his relationship with Chelsea.
Billy Ray (junior)
A smart, West Coast kid who is also a bit of a "smart ass". He has accompanied his dad and Chelsea on their visit to Norman and Ethel's summer home.
Charlie Martin
A 45 year old mail boat, postal carrier who was friends with Chelsea when they were young. Charlie's feelings were much more romantically inclined than Chelsea's and he still carries a flickering torch for her.
Telephone Operator
Offstage has two conversations over the 'phone' with Norman.
