Job Description
ABOUT THE POSITION In collaboration with other members of the paint shop and production staff, the Scenic Artist is responsible for painting, sculpting, and finishing all the scenery that goes from our shop to our stages. Typical Duties Include: Paint drops and scenery * Layout art from scenic designers by gridding, projecting, or freehand layout onto scenic drops and flats. * Mix color to match renderings * Apply paint using various scenic painting techniques as required by the renderings and prescribed by the Charge Scenic Artist * Participate in the training of scenic paint apprentice Sculpt and carve scenic elements * Layout and carve in foam and other scenic materials from drawings and models Maintain a clean and safe paint shop and work environment * Properly handle, use, and dispose of all paint materials * Clean and maintain paint equipment and tools Assist in the finishing and maintenance of scenery during load-in and run of Seattle Rep productions * Paint, finish, and maintain the scenery on stage during load-in, tech rehearsals, and the run Build and Maintain a Personal Investment in Seattle Rep and our EDI work * Attend and participate in all-staff company meetings * Attend and participate in staff Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion workshops
Required Qualifications
* Commitment to cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace via decisive action including consistently seeking out opportunities for self and community improvement in the areas of racial equity, accessibility, gender inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity. * 2 years of experience painting in a professional scene shop environment * Advanced knowledge of scenic painting and sculpting techniques * Advanced knowledge of scenic painting and sculpting tools * Knowledge of color theory * A demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team Ability to work extended periods painting on surfaces overhead, on sawhorses, on floor level, vertically and horizontally oriented * Ability to work with materials weighing up to 50lbs unassisted
Desired Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in theatre with a production emphasis (or equivalent education/experience) * Graphics experience * Knowledge of art history
