About the project and the company
The Original Theatre Black Dog has been performing professional quality plays on the Eastside and in Seattle for over thirty years, founded at The Feed Store in Issaquah’s Gilman Village, in 1986 by Artistic Director, Susan Bradford and a group of local actors, some of whom met as actors on the Village Theatre stage. These early productions included, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Fantasticks, and Blithe Spirit. The company reunited at The Couth Buzzard Book Store in Issaquah in 1996, deciding to make their home in Snoqualmie, WA at Isadora’s Cafe’ (now The Black Dog Arts Café). They also performed plays for four years at The Snoqualmie Center for the Performing Arts (now Woodman’s Lodge). Productions at both venues included: Beyond Therapy, A Lie of the Mind, True West, Barefoot in the Park, And Then There Were None, A Man for All Seasons, Dancing at Lughnasa, A Christmas Carol, A Hatful of Rain, Driving Miss Daisy, K2 and To Kill a Mockingbird, plus multi-themed theatrical reviews and playwrights’ festivals. As part of their mission to extend to other community venues, they performed Our Town (Sallal Grange in North Bend), and several Seattle performances including Northwest Actor’s Studio, A Long Day’s Journey Into Night (Balagan Theatre), Waiting for Godot, and The Birthday Party (Freehold Theatre). In 2018, we performed Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya at Freehold Theatre and in Issaquah, as the first production to be performed in community partnership with the Issaquah History Museums. A year later, the Theatre was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
