Tenderness by Nelle Tankus
Play Description:
At the dawn of a new swine flu pandemic, Lemon Lymes is a retired pop star and aspiring fascist looking to collaborate on a secret project with an adoring fan. Meanwhile, three Queerdos are planning for their uncertain futures as artificial intelligence renders their jobs obsolete. When a parasocial Lymes fan takes things too far and billionaire industries begin to collapse, the queerdos have to outsmart the state and keep their loved ones cared for. Tenderness is an anticapitalist cyberpunk experience you can enjoy from the comfort of your home computer or the theatre.

For audition video: 1-2 monologues of your choosing. Alternatively, 1-2 speeches from a politician or celebrity of your choosing. These can be apology videos from social media, official speeches, content from an interview, etc.
We request that the video remain under 2 minutes in total. It can be read or memorized. Unlisted YouTube links are preferred but other upload formats are accepted.
We encourage dramatic, somber, moving, thrilling, terrifying, unhinged, laughable, absurd, or anything else that strikes your fancy. We invite artistic interpretation and abundant play. We are not overly concerned with video quality but do be sure we can see and hear you clearly!

Character breakdown / Project needs
Chel
BIPOC, femme (they/them), late 20s/early 30s. Works in food service. Optimistic, hypersensitive, wide-eyed, loves bringing plants home for their apartment.
Naomi
Any race, femme (she/her), late 20s/early 30s. Works in retail. Pragmatic, disciplined, orderly, creates spreadsheets for going to the grocery store.
Shawn
White, butch or masc (any pronouns), late 20s/early 30s. Works in human services. Guarded, impulsive, resourceful, wears their heart on their sleeve, but hates it.
Marlot
BIPOC, cis man (he/him), late 40s/early 50s. Chel's father. Works in an office. Attentive, understanding, intense. Brings fresh flowers every week for his room.
Lemon Lymes
White, femme or non-binary (she/her), late 20s/early 30s. A popstar-turned-fascist. Confused, cold, edgelord. Will eat spaghetti for a year straight.
Silverfish
Any race, masc or non-binary (they/them), late 20s/early 30s. An outstanding capitalist. Obsessed with Limes, will fire their workers if they look at them funny.
