About the project and the company

Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for its holiday production of the family classic, The Wizard of OZ, based on the L. Frank Baum novel and MGM film. The Wizard of OZ will be directed and choreographed by Andrew Coopman with musical direction by Jeff Bell.

Auditions will be held Monday, August 9th and Tuesday, August 10th at Tacoma Little Theatre. Audition appointments will be set between the times of 7:00pm-9:00pm on Monday and 7:00pm-10:00pm on Tuesday in five-minute increments. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, August 11th.

Click your heels together as you experience one of the most famous stories of all time come to life on our stage. The Wizard of OZ has been enchanting families for generations. Follow the yellow brick road and join Dorothy, her little dog Toto, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion as they journey over the rainbow to the merry old land of Oz in search of the great and powerful Wizard. Will he grant them their hearts’ desires? With all your favorite songs, including “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “If I Only had a Brain,” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” this timeless musical will sweep you into a magical holiday adventure.

Auditioners are asked to prepare a 32-bar cut from two contrasting songs that show off your vocal technique. We may only ask for one, but have both ready. An accompanist is provided, so please bring sheet music clearly marked and in the correct key.

Actors of all ethnicities and gender identities are encouraged to audition and all roles are available. We will only be casting adults and youth over the age of 12 for this production. Dorothy (female, teens-20s), Aunt Em/Glinda (female, 30s-50s), Hunk/Scarecrow (male, 30s-40s), Hickory/Tin Man (male, 30s-40s), Zeke/Cowardly Lion (male, 30s-40s), Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch (female, 30s-50s), Professor Marvel/OZ (male, 30s-60s), Uncle Henry/Guard (male 30s-50s), Male and Female ensemble roles to play Munchkins, Flying Monkeys, OZians, Winkies, Poppies, Trees, Crows, and more (ages 12-adult). Ages given are playable ages, actors need not specifically fit the given age to audition.

Character breakdown / Project needs
Dorothy Gale
Female Teens - 20s Description: Dorothy is a plucky girl who is transported to the Land of Oz from her home in Kansas. Throughout her journey she is seen as determined, daring, honest, and loyal. Must be a strong singer/actor who moves very well. Must be comfortable with handling a live animal. Vocal Range: Soprano
Aunt Em/Glinda
Female 30s-50s Description: Aunt Em is Dorothy’s aunt who is hard working and stern, yet also concerned for Dorothy’s well being and safety. Glinda is Oz’s Good Witch of the North. She is he kind-hearted and magnanimous protector of Dorothy and her friends. Vocal Range: Legit Soprano
Hunk/Scarecrow
Male 30s-40s Description: Hunk is a Kansas farmhand who Dorothy later meets in Oz as the Scarecrow. Although the Scarecrow lacks the brains he wishes to receive from the Wizard and thereby doubts his own intelligence, he turns out to be the most clever and resourceful member of the group. Must be a fluid dancer. Vocal Range: Baritone
Hickory/Tin Man
Male 30s-40s Description: Hickory is a Kansas farmhand who Dorothy later meets in Oz as the Tin Man. The Tin Man is a hardened woodsman in search of a heart from the Wizard to reconnect with a past love. He actually is full of emotion and follows his instincts when helping his friends. Possible Tap Dancer. Vocal Range: Baritone
Zeke/Cowardly Lion
Male 30s-40s Description: Zeke is a Kansas farmhand who Dorothy later meets in Oz as the Cowardly Lion. As the King of Forest, the Cowardly Lion has a mighty roar, but his lack of courage leave him frightened and spineless, especially in front of the Wizard. His quest for courage puts him toe to toe with the Wicked Witch, proving to himself that he can stand up and face his fears. Vocal Range: Bari-Tenor
Almira Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West
Female 30s-50s Description: Almira Gulch is Dorothy’s menacing and meddling neighbor in Kansas who she later meets in Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West. The Witch is cunning, vengeful, and somewhat comical in her pursuit to destroy Dorothy and retrieve the ruby slippers. Must be comfortable riding a bike and handling a live animal. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano
Professor Marvel/Wizard of OZ
Male 30s-60s Description: Professor Marvel is a phony, yet amiable fortune teller in Kansas who Dorothy later meets in Oz as the Wizard. The powerless Wizard is egotistical and a bit of a blowhard, but eventually sees the good in the travelers and assists them with their wishes.
Uncle Henry/Emerald City Guard
Male 30s-50s Description: Uncle Henry is a busy man trying to keep his farm afloat. He is goodhearted and good natured. The Guard is boisterous and bombastic.
Male & Female Ensemble
All Genders 12-99 Description: Strong, versatile singers who are very comfortable singing in tight harmony to play Munchkins, Poppies, Winkies, Ozians, Flying Monkeys, etc. Strong movement a plus
