Charge Fabricator
Qualifications:
• Minimum of five years of experience in professional theatrical costuming
• Demonstrates proficiency in draping, flat patterning, and sculptural use of fabric as well as general craft experience
• Excellent garment construction skills
• Experience in creating period, modern, and fantastical costumes
• Excellent understanding of fabrics types, characteristics, uses, and limitations
• Capable of handing off work to overhire stitchers
• Experienced at estimating the time a project will take and staying within labor and materials budget
• Experienced at working with other crew members and/or production departments to create specialty costumes/pieces
• Demonstrates skill in craft materials including, but not limited to: buckram, felt, leather, vinyl, thermoplastics
• Demonstrates skill in basic hat blocking, stretching, and sizing techniques
• Punctual, responsible, possesses good communication skills
• Working knowledge of Costume History
• Demonstrates grace under pressure, flexibility, and good sense of humor
Responsibilities: Creates the patterns and supervises the construction of all costumes as designed by Costume Designers. Fits and oversees alterations and reworking of all built, rented, and pulled costumes as assigned. Sets high workroom standards for construction and serves as a resource for staff in construction methods.
• Sets the standards for quality and consistency in costume construction in the workroom
• Prepares time estimates for Costume Shop Head
• Manages time of self and others effectively, making choices that serve the needs of the production, the vision of the designer, and the time/materials budget of the theatre
• Fabricates patterns, either by draping or flat patterning, for specific actors
• Participates in the cutting, mockup and stitching of costumes as needed
• Oversees the fittings of all built, rented or pulled costumes
• Corrects and trues patterns, or alters costume as necessary--including all complete and necessary markings to be able to hand off pattern to another person
• Cuts or oversees cutting of fabric for garments
• Works with Shop Head to determine yardage estimates, advising them as to fabric types or weights that will be necessary to successfully fabricate costumes
• Works closely with the Costume Shop Head to set priorities for the show to move smoothly through the shop in the time scheduled
• Capable of creating craft related items such as: headwear, footwear, accessories, foam structures, mechanical costumes, masks, belts and other miscellany as designed by Costume Designer
• Completes or oversees alterations on craft items as necessary
• Knowledge of respirator use and basic safety skills
• Maintains the integrity of the costume design through the interpretation of the sketch
• Works with the Shop Head and overhire staff to complete notes during tech
• Contributes to a pleasant and professional atmosphere in the shop
• Attends weekly shop meetings
• Attends Company meetings as needed and available
• Performs other duties as assigned by Costume Shop Head
• Researches the period, style, and techniques when necessary
• Available for overtime as needed
