BATTERY POWERED SERIES 2022 – SEEKING PLAYWRIGHTS

Theatre Battery of Kent, WA is inviting writers to submit full-length plays, musicals, and screenplays for the Battery Powered Reading Series, taking place from July 23rd – 28th, 2022. Theatre Battery is returning to operations after two years of hiatus from in-person programming and we are enthusiastic to offer this resource to the community. Past participants in Battery Powered include Seayoung Yim, Amontaine Aurore, Jessica Andrewartha, Benjamin Benne, Andrew Lee Creech, Danielle Alexis Nicole Mitchel Francois, and others.

Puget Sound area playwrights of all backgrounds and in any stage of career development are encouraged to apply. Scripts from non-local writers are also welcome this year, with the understanding that the playwright’s participation will be remote if selected for a reading.

The mission of the Battery Powered Series is to provide writers an opportunity to hear their work read aloud by professional actors and responded to by audiences and colleagues. Participation in Battery Powered in 2022 includes a pre-reading zoom meeting with artistic and casting staff, a one-day rehearsal/reading process with actors and audience in-person, and a post-mortem discussion about the development and production goals of the project moving forward.

The readings for the public will occur at Theatre Battery’s adapted space at Kent Station in July. The exact schedule will be determined based on the casting needs of the play and your preferred schedule. There is no limitation to subject matter, style, theme, cast size, or cast type, but it must be a work that you would describe as “full length.” Selected writers will receive an honorarium of $200, and actors/collaborators participating in the reading series will be paid hourly for their contributions.

To apply, please email us at theatrebattery@gmail.com with your current script and a cover letter that provides a brief summary of your past work, the development goals of your project, and what your schedule looks like for the month of July. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
