SUMMARY:Starstuff: A Festival of Solo Artists
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Seattle-based Astro Lab Productions\, Starstuff: A Festival of Solo Artists brings together performers\, songwriters\, interdisciplinary artists\, and audiences for an experiment in connection. It’s a celebration of individual expression and the extraordinary things that happen when we allow another person’s experience to change our own. \nRather than presenting performances as separate\, finished products\, Starstuff organizes its programming into four constellations of artists whose work informs\, challenges\, and responds to one another. \nEach constellation begins with a long-form solo performance: an artist inviting an audience into a deeply personal world. A songwriter then creates an original song in response to that artist’s work\, while a short-form interdisciplinary artist develops a performance designed to break down the boundaries between artist and audience\, performance and connection\, presentation and presence. \nIt’s an experience in which one piece of art generates another\, and audiences are invited to encounter not only the work itself\, but the relationships and discoveries that bring it into being. \nBeyond the mainstage performances\, Starstuff offers creative workshops\, opportunities for conversation\, and an intimate immersive experience that explores healing through music and personal storytelling. \nThe artists remain part of the festival throughout\, experiencing one another’s work and engaging with the people who have come to see it. The experience is built as much for them as for the audience. \nStarstuff grew from Astro Lab Productions’ commitment to reimagining how new theatrical work is developed\, how artists are supported\, and how audiences participate in the creative process. \nSTARSTUFF WEEKEND AT A GLANCE!\nFRIDAY\, OCTOBER 23\n7:30 PM · Artist Constellation\nAlma David Taylor Life-changing moments\, spontaneous songs\nMaya Russell Soul\, pop\, and R&B from a YoungArts winner\nTL Forsberg · “Between Two Worlds – I Wasn’t Cancelled…just confused! SUMMARY:A Picasso
DESCRIPTION:A masterpiece can change hands. The truth is harder to possess. \nParis\, 1941. Pablo Picasso is brought face-to-face with a mysterious woman whose seemingly simple request quickly becomes something far more complicated. What begins as a conversation soon develops into a tense and fascinating battle of intelligence\, wit\, charm\, and manipulation. \nWith only two people in the room\, every word becomes part of the game. Questions about art and authenticity gradually give way to something deeper: Who gets to decide what has value? Can an artist ever truly separate himself from his work? And what happens when art becomes powerful enough to threaten those in power? \nInspired by real events and set against the dangerous backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris\, Jeffrey Hatcher’s A Picasso imagines an encounter in which art\, politics\, identity\, and survival collide. Picasso must navigate a situation where the wrong answer could have consequences far beyond the fate of a painting\, while the woman across from him may have motivations of her own. \nSharp\, suspenseful\, unexpectedly funny\, and performed as an intimate two-character duel\, A Picasso explores the complicated relationship between the artist and the art\, truth and deception\, power and resistance. \nAs the balance of control continually shifts between its two characters\, one question remains: \nWho is really interrogating whom? \nBy Jeffrey Hatcher\nDirected by Greg LoProto

SUMMARY:The Chinese Lady
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese Lady is based on the true story of Afong Moy\, a Chinese woman displayed as a living exhibit in 1800s America. Told in first person from her point of view\, she holds nothing back as she recounts a half-century of performing her culture to curious onlookers. Her dreams and aspirations shift with the passing of time as she discovers what it means to reclaim her story. The Chinese Lady is a funny\, heartbreaking\, and devastatingly contemporary portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman. \n“Piercing and intimate.” – The New York Times \n“Afong Moy might not have fulfilled her intention of educating and connecting the world in her life\, but The Chinese Lady sure has the promise and potential [to] do so.” – The Front Row Center \n“The Chinese Lady goes beyond an indictment of the imperial gaze\, peering through the space that allows someone to be considered an other and asking what it’s made of. Ignorance\, yes. But also curiosity\, desire\, and a wish to understand.” – The New York Theatre Guide
