About the project and the company

From the Pulitzer-winning playwright behind Angels in America comes a dramatic parable for our time. A Bright Room Called Day follows a group of artists and political activists struggling to preserve themselves in 1930s Berlin as the Weimar Republic surrenders to the seduction of fascism. Often exquisitely lyrical, always exhilaratingly intelligent, the poetic world of the play moves beyond the bounds of historical reality with the morally outraged outpourings of a contemporary New York woman. Her fury brings into stark relief the discomfiting similarities between then and now, and challenges us to remember that although evil may seem inevitable, it is never irresistible.

Agnes Egling – mid- to late 30s, any ethnicity; the central character in the play, Agnes is bit player/character actress in the German film industry. She is capable of great emotion and great indecision. Some experience with ASL required*.

Vealtninc Husz – mid-40s, any ethnicity. Cinematographer. Hungarian exile. Missing an eye. Partner to Agnes. Some knowledge of ASL helpful, but not required*.

Gregor Bazwald (Baz) – early to mid-30s, any ethnicity. LGBTQ person who works for the Berlin Institute for Human Sexuality. Some knowledge of ASL helpful, but not required*.

Paulinka Erdnuss – mid-30s, but looks a little younger, any ethnicity. Actress in the German film industry; a featured player on her way to becoming a minor star. Some knowledge of ASL helpful, but not required*.

Rosa Malek / Zillah Katz – Malek: mid- to late 20s, any ethnicity. Minor functionary of the KPD (Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands).  / Zilla: contemporary American Jewish woman. 30s. BoHo/East Village New Wave with Anarcho-Punk tendencies. Some knowledge of ASL helpful, but not required*.

Emil Traum / Roland – Traum: mid- to late 20s, any ethnicity. Slightly higher-ranking functionary of the KPD. / Roland: German, 20s, born in East Germany. Speaks no English.

*Note: This production will utilize American Sign Language (ASL) in a conversational manner. Most actors will have a need to converse to a limited degree in ASL, while others (specifically Agnes) will need to be convincingly conversational. Previous experience will be helpful.

The roles of Annabella Gotchling, Die Alta, and Gottfried Swetts are cast.
