People in the Square 2024

Description
People in the Square is a cabaret-style musical revue which invites the audience a glimpse into the many different inhabitants, past and present, of Pioneer Square. Based on historical people and events, People in the Square is a collection of songs, short scenes and movement, celebrating the diversity and fascinating stories of Seattle’s first neighborhood. The musical ranges in time from the original inhabitants of the Duwamish and Suquamish Tribes, the early pioneers and gold miners, to those who frequent Pioneer Square in modern times. They comprise the wealthy and the poor, occupants and visitors, sports fans and art dealers, some never being truly aware of the other. People in the Square embraces the uniqueness of a community where the wealthiest and the poorest of our city occupy the same three acres together. People in the Square strives to bring awareness, understanding, acceptance and even some laughter to those who visit this ever evolving melting pot in the heart of Seattle.

The show will take place four weekends in July 2024 (12 performances) in the basement of the Good Arts Building, converting Beneath the Streets tour headquarters into a cabaret-type theatrical venue, with the audience seated at small tables, evoking the feel of a sidewalk cafe. The performers will move throughout the space, the characters minging and interacting with audience members—making the audience themselves part of the “People in the Square”.

People in the Square (composed by David Nyberg, book/lyrics by Rose Cano), produced by Creative Hiatus Productions, is an original book musical that describes through dance and song the inhabitants of Seattle’s first neighborhood, Pioneer Square, over the last three centuries. This 75- minute musical journey features 4 actor-singers and a live 3 -piece band to depict the different populations that converge on The Square, past and present. No recorded music is used. All performers and artists involved are local. Rehearsals will take place in the venue on evenings and weekend during the month of June.
