About the project and the company

Yun Theatre, in collaboration with Theatre Off Jackson, announces a casting call for “June is the First Fall,” written by Yilong Liu. This poignant play centers on Don, a gay Chinese man, who returns home to Hawaii to rediscover missing memories of himself and his family that he moved away from. His week-long stay opens wounds with his father and sister that never healed, aggravating Don’s struggle to find love and belonging in his life.

Character breakdown / Project needs
Scott
Mid- 20s- Early 30s, White, Jane’s boyfriend. A local Caucasian (haole) in Hawaii. Supportive and warm. Requires intimacy with Jane and Don.
Jane
Late 20s- Early 30s, Second Gen Chinese American, daughter. Emotionally mature, patient, and is the glue keeping the family together. Requires intimacy with Scott.
Don
Mid-Late 20s, Second Gen Chinese American, son. A complex character dealing with identity, familial expectations, and personal trauma. Struggles with his past and the loss of his mother. Requires intimacy with Scott.
David
40-50s, First Gen Chinese American, born in Hawaii, father. Restaurant owner. A father figure grappling with the cultural and personal transitions of moving to Hawaii and raising a family amidst personal loss.
Yu Qin
30-40s, Chinese Immigrant, mother. Must be able to speak Chinese/Chinglish. Appears as a memory/ghost, indicating a playful yet nurturing motherly figure deeply connected to her culture and family.
