Character breakdown / Project needs
Romeo
Leading role for a teenage performer. Romeo is impatient, darkly intelligent, and popular. He has a strong command of language, kinetic physicality, and critical moral compass. Sheltered from a volatile community by fiercely loving parents, Romeo is both loving and well-loved.
Juliet
Leading role for a teenage performer. Juliet is the prized possession of a powerful family, but she frustrates and disobeys them as she values her independence much more than their money. She is well-read, well-spoken, and unstoppable in her will.
Tybalt
Leading role for a teenage performer. Juliet's cousin. Tybalt is ready to prove to his family that he would kill in the name of their honor. He carries wealth with pride, knows how to sway a room, and is full of athleticism.
Mercutio
Leading role for a teenage performer. Romeo's best friend, and a cousin to the Prince of Verona. Mercutio is a young scholar, artist, socialite, lover, and an insatiable social contrarian.
Benvolio
Leading role for a teenage performer. Romeo's big cousin. Benvolio presents to his elders as a good influence on Romeo, but he also knows how to have a good time and incite some chaos.
Paris
Leading role for a performer aged 20-30. County Paris is a widely admired young noble and a friend to Juliet's Father who wants her hand in marriage. Though this is a business arrangement, Paris dreams of being the perfect spouse and fulfilling the greater good of both Verona and Juliet.
Nurse
Leading role for a performer aged 35-60. A working class widow who lost her own child and became a wet nurse to the Capulet family. She uses humor and anxious caregiving to remain in the graces of the family, and she most fears being outcast by them.
Friar Lawrence
Leading role for a performer aged 40+. In Verona, the powerful families perform Catholicism without truly committing to the values - Friar Lawrence is thus used to being both respected and endangered under greater social pressures. He has lived a life of humility, chastity, and people-pleasing.
Lord Montague
Leading role for a performer aged 35-50. A father of two and successful heir to the Montague house, business, and fortune. He has covertly killed enemies in the pursuit of his work.
Lady Montague
Leading role for a performer aged 30-40. Romeo's mother. She married for love and once was a party to the blood thirsty thrills of being a Montague, but having children changed her feelings about the city and its dangers - now she is an aggressive protector.
Lord Capulet
Leading role for a performer aged 40-60. Juliet's father and the current figure head of the Capulet family and empire - a dangerous man to know, but also vital, fun, loud, and happy.
Lady Capulet
Leading role for a performer aged 25-30. Juliet's mother, an upper class woman who was put in a business marriage and pregnant by the age of 13. She resents the loss of her own romantic life, but this marriage has come with access to wealth, fashion, friends, and assassins. She is Juliet's rival.
Prince
Leading role for a performer aged 10-100. As royalty adjacent to a throne, this Prince(ss) is humbly famous but not always obeyed. Charismatic, dutiful, peace-keeping.
Chorus
Supporting roles for actors of all ages and backgrounds, including Peter, Sampson, Gregory, Balthazar, Apothecary, Rosaline, Juliet’s Grandparents, Romeo’s Grandparents, Romeo’s Little Sister, Cooks, Servants, Musicians, and Party Dancers. Includes both speaking and non-speaking roles.
