Audition for Wild Dumrul

About the project and the company

My name is Irfan Cetin, a senior Drama Performance student, and I’m currently seeking actors for my upcoming Capstone Project. The project involves a one-act play called WILD DUMRUL, adapted by Gungor Dilmen from a Turkish mythological story. If you’re interested in being part of this epic production, please see below for submission details. Feel free to reach out to icetin@uw.edu with any questions.

SYNOPSIS

Are you ready to die? Moreover, are you ready to die for someone you love?

Wild Dumrul is a story about a young and madcap man in Turkish mythology. He constructs a bridge over a dry creek and collects 33 coins from those who pass safely, but charges 40 coins from those who fail to cross, often resorting to physical force. One day, a group of nomads settles near his bridge. When a warrior dies in their camp, Wild Dumrul hears the cries and discovers the cause of the commotion. He becomes enraged with Azrael (the Angel of Death) for taking the young warrior’s life and challenges him, ultimately offending the Almighty. However, the challenge is accepted!

The tale of Dumrul delves into themes such as honor, ignorance, family, devotion, and the sacrifices made for loved ones. I’m intrigued by how we can breathe life into these themes through devising and improvisation. While we have a script as our foundation, I’m completely open to exploring dynamic approaches and actively involving our audience in our creative journey. My goal is to ensure that the entire project is enjoyable and enriching for everyone involved, including our audience.

We’ll be working as a cohesive ensemble, and roles may evolve over time, even if you’re initially cast in a primary role. Additionally, we’ll have the opportunity to explore and share cultural elements, such as old wedding customs in Turkic tribes. Get ready to dance, folks!
