Auditions for Shaina Taub's "Twelfth Night"

Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts

About the project and the company

Red Curtain is excited to announce auditions for the musical adaptation of Twelfth Night, conceived by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub, with book and lyrics by Shaina Taub, directed by Scott Randall with music direction by Rose Yurcina and choreographed by Krista Patt. Performance dates will be May 24-June 9, 2024.

Twelfth Night tells the story of Viola, a young heroine who washes up on the shores of Illyria, disguises herself as a man, is sent to court a countess and falls hard for a Duke. As she navigates this strange and wonderful new land, she finds her true self and true love in the process. Named one of the best theatrical productions of 2018 by Time, The Hollywood Reporter and The Washington Post, Twelfth Night is a rousing contemporary musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy about mistaken identity and self-discovery.

The music in Twelfth Night is contemporary and eclectic, pulling from diverse styles including New Orleans Jazz, R&B, funk and pop. The only character in the show who sings in what we would consider a “standard musical theatre” style is Malvolio. Auditioners are highly encouraged to choose a song which gives them the freedom to riff, improvise, or make the cut their own. We strongly encourage auditioners to listen to the soundtrack and explore other music written by Shaina Taub for inspiration.

Location of Audition

Red Curtain Arts Center 9315 State Ave #J Marysville, WA 98270 We are in the same shopping center as Goodwill. Our entrance is around back, behind the beauty school.

Other details

All auditionees will also be required to attend dance auditions on March 14 at 6pm. If you cannot attend at that time, please contact the office IN ADVANCE to make other arrangements (360.322.7402).

Audition requirements

Red Curtain practices unconventional casting that is gender blind and color conscious when allowed by the rights holder. All roles EXCEPT FESTE are open. This is a community theatre production and there is no pay for actors. Please choose an appropriate musical selection 60-90 seconds in length, and bring properly marked sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist. You may also opt to bring your own accompaniment track to sing with as an alternative. No acapella singing, please. If you have intermediate to advanced skills on any portable musical instrument (clarinet, trumpet, guitar, ukulele, harmonica, etc.) we would love for you to bring your instrument to the audition as well and play us a short (20-60) second piece on your instrument. Auditions will be held March 12 and 13, with mandatory dance auditions on March 14. Actors should prepare a comedic Shakespearean monologue no longer than two minutes, along with their song selection. Head shots and resumes should be emailed in advance (office@redcurtainfoundation.org) or brought with you to auditions.
