Ballyhoo Theatre

About the project and the company

Ballyhoo Theatre Mainstage will be presenting CARRIE: The Musical, October 25 – November 10, 2024.

***

About the Show: Carrie White is a teenage outcast who longs to fit in. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s dominated by her loving but cruelly controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, Carrie features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, music by Michael Gore, and lyrics by Dean Pitchford.

Note: Parents of minors are encouraged to research the content of this musical prior to auditions.

Character breakdown / Project needs
CARRIE WHITE
(to play age 17) – A painfully shy outsider who, in spite of her best efforts to belong, has been the victim of her classmates' cruel jokes since childhood, as well as her mother's strict control at home. She transforms from ugly duckling into graceful – and then vengeful – swan. While showering at school, Carrie has her first period, for which the other girls in her class tease her. This event sparks the emergence of Carrie's telekinetic powers, which she ultimately uses for revenge after being cruelly pranked at the prom. A3-E5 ($200.00 stipend)
MARGARET WHITE
(to play age range 35-50) – A woman of visceral extremes, she balances her fervent religious convictions with maternal love for Carrie. In her desire to protect Carrie from the world, her fanaticism often drives her to abuse her daughter. C4-E5 ($200.00 stipend)
SUE SNELL
(to play age 17-18) – A straight-A student who's been popular her entire life, she's remarkably level headed for her age. Her unthinking participation in a cruel act of bullying causes a crisis of conscience that leads her on a journey to try to right things. A3-E5 ($100.00 stipend)
TOMMY ROSS
(to play age 17-18) – Popular star athlete, valedictorian, and all around stand-out, he's the boy that all the girls want to be with, and all the boys want to be. He also has unexpected, quirky sensitivity and is just starting to mine his personal life and feelings. At first Tommy takes no interest in Carrie but takes her to the prom after his girlfriend, Sue, asks him to. Tommy is apprehensive but soon finds himself wanting to become friends with Carrie. B2-C5 ($100.00 stipend)
CHRIS HARGENSEN
(to play age 17-18) – Rich and spoiled-rotten, Chris is a popular student whose arrogant self-assurance makes her believe that the rules don't apply to her. Chris hates Carrie, bullying her at every opportunity. She leads the other girls in throwing tampons at Carrie after she has her first period, and feels no remorse after the fact. After Chris is banned from the prom as punishment for bullying Carrie, she vows revenge. A3-E5 ($100.00 stipend)
BILLY NOLAN
(to play age 20) – Now in his sixth year in high school, Billy's a stupid bad boy whose wise mouth troublemaking has led him to spend more time in detention than in class. Chris manipulates him to do her bidding. B2-C5 ($100.00 stipend)
MS LYNN GARDNER
(to play age range 30-45) – Gardner, the girls' P.E. teacher, can be a strict disciplinarian if necessary, but when Carrie arouses her maternal instinct, she surprises herself by also revealing a protective "fairy godmother" side. A3-B4 ($100.00 stipend)
MR. STEPHENS
(doubles as REVEREND BLISS) – (to play age range 30-55) This well-intentioned English teacher and guidance counselor struggles to help his students realize their potential. A dedicated educator, he's stretched thin in his duties, woefully underpaid, and a bit overwhelmed as to how to handle the Billy Nolans of the classroom combat zone. A3-B4 ($100.00 stipend)
FRIEDA
(to play age 17-18) – Sue's brainy pal, she's an easy-going, get-along follower and a tireless extracurricular committee volunteer. ($50.00 stipend)
