Seeking expressive performer to play 16 year old girl in short piece for Sound Theatre's Gaslight Project

Theater of Possibility

About the project and the company

We need someone awesome to play a 16 year old girl to deliver poetry in a skit that we are presenting as part of Sound Theatre’s Gaslight project on Saturday afternoon July 16

Theater of Possibility’s program for youth with autism and other (dis)abilities has been invited to present some short sketches on the theme of gaslighting of people with disabilities.   A young autistic woman who is non-speaking and uses a letter board to communicate has written a beautiful short skit about how teachers assumed she was unintelligent because she couldn’t speak.   Her skit juxtaposes the teachers treating her in a demeaning manner with her poetry expressing her unspoken thoughts.  We need an expressive young woman to deliver her poetry, while we see the author pointing to her letter board, and background projections show jumbled letters forming words.

Our schedule is:

Saturday July 2 – rehearse 10 am-noon -University Heights Center

Thursday July 7 – 7-9 pm UHC

Saturday July 9- 10-noon UHC

Thursday July 14 -7-9 UHC

There may be additional one-on-one rehearsal TBA.

Possibly add a rehearsal this week at 12th Avenue arts.

Saturday July 16- rehearse 11-1:30 -12th Avenue Arts

Lunch break- 1:30-2 (pizza provided)

2-4 pm performance 12th Avenue Arts

Our performance will feature several short skits of which this is one, followed by some audience-interactive work based in August Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed, in which we dissect the injustices and explore strategies for empowerment.  We’ll guide the performers, so there is no need to have prior TO training, just a willingness to do some authentic improv.  Dance or movement experience is a plus.

Our troupe is “neurodiverse” including people with autism and other disabilities and neurotypical allies.

The piece is about 5-10 minutes long, and contains three poems and a few other voiced over thoughts, so it’s probably about 3-4 minutes work of material to memorize.   There may be opportunities to appear in the other sketches, if interested.

Location of Audition

Remote. Rehearsals are at University Heights Center in Seattle. Performance is at 12th Avenue Arts.

Character breakdown / Project needs
16 year old female
She is the alter ego of a non-speaking autistic teenage girl, expressing her written poetry. Intelligent, passionate, determined, and powerful, but feeling cut off by virtue of her disability and underestimated by people's assumptions about her. Performer may be any ethnicity. The author will play herself as the non-speaker. Looking like the author (bi-racial, Iranian-European) is a plus, but not required.
