Urinetown - Ballyhoo Youth Summer Intensive

Ballyhoo Theatre

About the project and the company

Announcing auditions for the Ballyhoo Summer Intensive: Urinetown!
***
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, environmental collapse, privatization of natural resources, bureaucracy, municipal politics, and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Character breakdown / Project needs
Bobby Strong
The dashing, noble young everyman who works for Miss Pennywise at the poorest, filthiest urinal in town; the eventual protagonist and romantic hero who starts a revolution, and falls in love with Hope Cladwell along the way.
Hope Cladwell
Cladwell's innocent and lovely daughter, torn between listening to her father and helping Bobby in overthrowing her father's empire, having just returned from school at The Most Expensive University in the World.
Penelope Pennywise
The tough, jaded warden of the poorest, filthiest urinal in town. A shrewd, penny-scrounging cheapskate, Pennywise is a figure of authority and lives to maintain order at the public bathrooms. She harbors a deep, dark secret.
Caldwell B. Cladwell
The evil president and owner of the Urine Good Company, a miserly moneygrubber who gleefully exploits the poor with his outrageous toilet fees.
Officer Lockstock
The tongue-in-cheek narrator of our story, he is a corrupt policeman who secretly kills off the guilty offenders. Bold, brash, and larger than life in many ways.
Little Sally
A precocious, thoroughly irreverent and smartly funny street urchin; the quasi-narrator who always out-smarts Lockstock and constantly questions the play's logic.
Officer Barrel
He is Lockstock's trusty sidekick, always following in his shadow. Loves his job. Creepy, loud, overjoyed, and hiding something.
Joseph "Old Man" Strong
Bobby's rebellious father, whose refusal to pay the fee causes him to be sent to Urinetown, ultimately launching the revolution. Will double in the UGC ensemble, as this character dies early.
Josephine “Ma” Strong
Bobby's mother and Joseph's wife. A strong-willed woman with a bite, able to withstand the hard hand life has dealt her.
Hot Blades Harry
One of the Poor, he is a psychopathic and can become a violent loose cannon.
Little Becky Two Shoes
