Julie Beckman is a freelance theater director, adapter and educator based in Seattle. Recent directing credits include OR, with Theatre22 at Seattle Public Theater, A Christmas Carol 2021 at ACT Seattle, and her own adaptation of Alice in Wonderland with Theatre22 at Volunteer Park. She directed Water by the Spoonful (Seattle Times Footlight Award, 3 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards, Gregory Award) and The Happiest Song Plays Last, both by Quiara Alegria Hudes, with Theatre22. Also with Theatre22 she directed the critically acclaimed version of The Revolutionists, the west coast premiere of Theresa Rebeck's Downstairs at ACTlab (People’s Choice Award), as well as Annapurna (People's Choice Award) and Fifth of July. With Book-It she adapted and directed Jane Eyre, Hard Times, and Waxwings. Other directing work includes Trevor with MAP Theatre, 26 Miles for Latino Theatre Projects, A Small Fire with Sound Theatre Company (4 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards), and 4 Dogs and a Bone for Theater Schmeater (Seattle Times Footlight Award). Directing work with Strawberry Theatre Workshop includes The Bells (three Seattle Times Footlight Awards), The Elephant Man (4 Gregory nominations) and Fellow Passengers. She adapted and directed the world premiere of Edith Wharton's The Bunner Sisters for Athena Theatre Project at Theatre Off Jackson as well as the premiere of Rose Cano's Bernie's Apt, co-produced by eSe Teatro and ACTlab. Her work has also been seen in Chicago, Washington, D.C, Cincinnati, Atlanta, St. Louis, on Whidbey Island, and at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Company in Winnipeg. She has taught and directed in a dozen different schools and universities, and has an MFA in directing from Northwestern University.
