Auditions for Staged Reading of musical "A Time to Live"

About the project and the company

Writers Kathleen Lyndon (book) and Brenda Giordano (music & lyrics) need several actors/singers for two staged readings of the new musical, “A Time to Live”. The story is inspired by the ancient story of Ruth, who overcame odds stacked against her religiously and culturally to claim a place in the royal line of King David. The theme of “A Time to Live” is that hope is stronger than grief. The musical style is ‘Prince of Egypt’ meets ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. The show was produced in community theater in 2017 with six performances and an audience of 900. Parts of the show have been presented three times in New York at Theater Resources Unlimited to panels of Broadway experts with excellent feedback. We are currently working on revisions with New York dramaturge, Cate Cammarata, with Create Theater on revisions.  The readings are planned for June 4th and 5th, 2022 in the Seattle/Bellevue, Washington area. The readings are on-book with piano but no costumes, props, or sets. The show is sponsored by Newport Creative Arts.

Rehearsals are on five Saturday afternoons (4/9, 4/23, 4/30, 5/21, 5/28) and one Thursday evening (5/26). The performances of the readings are on Saturday, June 4, 2022, 7 pm and Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2022. About half of the parts are cast with seven available roles; people of color are welcome.

Available Roles for Audition:

Naomi – Female, age 50 plus. Soprano.

Ahaz – Male, age mid-20s to 70s. Baritone, Bass, or Tenor

2 Female roles; age mid-20s to 70s. Mezzo soprano or Alto

Merchant/other roles – Male, late teens to 70s. Baritone, Bass or Tenor

Kilion/Slaver/Mehu – Male, age 9 to 12, Boy Soprano/Alto (prior to voice change)

Mahlon/Caleb – Male, age 9 to 12, Boy Soprano/Also (prior to voice change)

Audition requirements

Please come prepared with a short monologue (no need to have it memorized) and a song to sing showing your range and vocal strength. A pianist will be available. Everyone must be an excellent reader of English, a strong singer and good musical sight reader. There is some flexibility on roles for vocal range except for Naomi. Please come with a mask.
