About the Project

Tacoma Little Theatre is holding auditions for Kenneth Lin’s, Po Boy Tango, which celebrates the human spirit and the joy of cooking. The production will be directed by David Hsieh.

Auditions will be held Sunday, October 23rd and Monday, October 24th at Tacoma Little Theatre (210 N I Street, Tacoma WA 98403) and on October 25th at STAR Center (3873 S 66th St, Tacoma, WA 98409). Audition appointments will be set starting at 6:00pm on Sunday and 7:00pm on Monday & Tuesday in ten-minute increments. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at Tacoma Little Theatre. All actors must schedule their appointment using Casting Manager at the link below. TLT requires that all actors provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Po Boy Tango tells the story of Richie Po, a Taiwanese immigrant who turns to his estranged friend Gloria, an African-American Soul Food Chef, to help him recreate his mother’s ‘Great Banquet’. Despite the challenges of shark fin soup, duck po boy sandwiches, and underlying cultural tensions, they find common ground through their shared humor and the blending of traditional Chinese cuisine and African-American soul food. Helped by lessons from Po Mama’s television cooking show, the two discover a deeper understanding of food, culture, and the nature of friendship.

Po Boy Tango features specific casting requirements and all roles are available:
RICHIE PO - Asian American male - 50's. Chinese immigrant, factory worker. Lonely, sensitive, fearful, selfless, awkward, clumsy yet endearing. He lives in pain, regret and fear, and has lost his path. A terrible cook.
GLORIA B - African American female - 40's. African American nurse. Friendly, feisty, a firecracker, joyful and playful, yet guarded, insecure and lonely. Can also be controlling, demanding and hotheaded. A master at authentic southern cooking. In denial about so much.
PO MAMA - Asian American female - 70's. A Taiwanese master chef to the stars and a television personality. funny, charming, regal, but can be overbearing, controlling, riotous. Full of guilt and regret over her son.

All actors receive a $120.00 travel remibursement.

Once cast, Po Boy Tango will begin rehearsals on November 21, 2022 with the production running from Friday, January 20, 2023 to Sunday, February 5, 2023.
