Tacoma Arts Live Auditions: STILL a Poetic Journey of Two Women

Expires: February 10, 2023

About the Project

AUDITION NOTICE:

STILL

A Poetic Journey of Two Women

Seeking 5 Devising Collaborators/Performers ages 18 or older to join our company and participate in a collaborative devising process exploring the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Dr. Maya Angelou.

Themes to explore through this process include age, gender, class and race. This exciting creative process is lead in partnership with theatre, playwriting, and poetry faculty from UWT School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and will result in the creation of a new play to be performed by 2-3 members of the devising company in May 2023 at the Washington State History Museum. The play will be performed as a work in development, with an opportunity for the audience to offer feedback and shape the future of the play.

Desired skills include Improvisation, physical theatre, character development, acting, spoken word; Movement background in Contemporary/Modern or Creative Movement a plus. Non-binary actors encouraged to apply.

Preparing for Auditions:

Because this devising process will develop the script through the exploration of multiple artistic perspectives (i.e., movement, sound, image, language, etc …), this audition process is open to creative storytellers from all backgrounds. This means that while we are of course interested in performers from traditional acting backgrounds, we also welcome auditions from dancers, singers, musicians, spoken word artists, etc … basically anyone who feels that the work and the project speak to them and that they have a unique voice to bring to the project through their art.

We would like to see the following two elements from all of our auditioners:

For actors:
1. Memorize and perform one of the selected poems
2. Prepare a monologue that you feel contrasts the poem. Additional monologue should not be longer than 2 minutes.

For performers from other backgrounds:
1. Memorize and perform/recite one of the selected poems
2. Prepare an artistic response to the poem. This is open to any interpretation, for example, dance, a musical response, movement, image, words, etc. We ask that the response is no longer than 3 minutes.

We encourage auditioners to contact us if there is any clarification they need.

Contact us to communicate which audition day you plan to audition and to receive an audition time slot as well as the list of selected audition poems.

Please bring a headshot and resume to the audition.
